The Giving Tree

Thursday February 27, 2008
We drove to Norview Elementary School in Norfolk, Virginia and after checking in, at the office, shortly after that we had two 4 year old students at the office, escorting us to the classroom. In the class, all the students introduced themselves and told us what they want to be when they grow up. Some of them want to be a Singer, Pop Star, Policeman, Doctor, Sportsman, and Teacher. Being a singer was more popular profession among the kids.
They kids were so open and pure that it was hard to be nervous or worry about anything. They were full of love and energy. Asking all kind of interesting questions ranging from why women in our country cover their hair with scarf, to the kind of food we eat, animals we have and the cars we drive. We were deeply moved and impressed of how well they knew of our past, what we had done or encountered and also the contents of our website. We give lot of credit to Ms. Stephanie Daughtrey that has created so much love and curiosity in these kids and how lucky her students are for having teacher like her.
At the second part of the visit, we went to the school library and many more kids aging mainly 4 years old and some up to 10 years old had attended the presentation. We had a special show for them and part of that was showing pictures of kids in Iran, some other school children in New York and Amsterdam. The students sang some songs; two students read a book about a tree and at the end that book was given to us as a gift.
The tree that we were about to plant was a Plum tree that gives fruit and according to others, also gives Joy, Memory, Love, Peace and Friendship. The tree was decided to be called “The Giving” tree.
Outside the back of the building, the giving tree was planted in front of about 150+ kids.
Even though we had attended many churches, schools, universities, colleges, etc., this experience with these kids was different. I am not sure whether we learned from kids, they learned from us, or the teachers from kids, but however you look at it, it was a great learning experience and we dealt with lot of substance and no politics.
These kids where truly angels and we will miss them.
Thank you Ms. Daughtery, and Ms. Butler for inviting us and making this event possible.
After visiting school we received a letter from Ms. Daughtery that was really touching for us
Dear Nassim and Jafar
I have some messages from the children. They are dictating as I write.
Tijon says " I love Nassim"
Christopher says " Thank you for coming to our classroom."
Brandy says " I love you too"
Dedrick and Zaria say "I love you all"
Chase wants to say "Thank you for coming and planting the tree with us
Devian says " I wish that ya'll could come back"
Niare wants to say thank you for visiting us and telling us about your
language and thank you for sending us the pictures of the food"
Jmon says "I'd love you to come back"
Tristika says "I wish you come back tomorrow"
Malek says "Thank you for coming to visit us and showing us what Iran looks like and we wish you could come back when you are done planting trees."
Tiandre says "Thank you for coming to our school."
Detroy says Thank you, thank you for visiting us and we love you for teaching the whole world about peace."
April says " I love you for coming to our class and showing us your pretty hair and I liked it when you helped us plant the tree and I love Jafar and Nassim."

Stephanie Dougtrey

We are going to miss all of these angles
